As a program of The Task Force for Global Health, the Brighton Collaboration joins colleagues across the organization and partners worldwide in mourning the passing of Dr. William H. Foege.
One of the leaders of smallpox eradication and a former Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Foege co-founded The Task Force for Global Health in 1984 and helped establish a collaborative model that continues to guide the organization’s work across nearly 20 programs including the Brighton Collaboration. Widely recognized for his role in the eradication of smallpox and his service as Director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, he was also a mentor and advocate whose influence reached far beyond any single achievement.
Dr. Foege’s belief in collaboration, evidence-based decision making, and shared responsibility remains central to the Brighton Collaboration’s mission. We honor his life by carrying these values forward in our work to strengthen vaccine safety science and support global public health.
